That's what we did in 2007... our first Backpack event...Operation: 1,000 Backpacks 2007
I was stunned to learn how much of an impact one backpack made on a young man. According to the school administrator, when the BPs were distributed to youngsters in the Bronx last August, one 6th grade boy didn't understand. This young man, I was told, has been bounced around from foster home to foster home his whole life and did not have the ability or capacity to comprehend someone doing something nice for him...for NOTHING IN RETURN! That had never happened to him before...EVER!
I was told that before he received his Backpack, he was quite introverted and always sad. He became fascinated with the idea that there are kind people out here. He asked a question, then another, then 20 or 30 more. The teachers and counselors were amazed by his curiosity. He now takes part in all activities, has become pretty popular and is happy for the first time in his life!
Imagine me when I received the phone call telling me this. "Do you want to know whose name was on the luggage tag?" I was asked. "No, that's unimportant. This belongs to every one of us", I replied.
Even if the other 999 Backpacks got kicked aside and never used, all of our hard work was worth it. I wonder how many other stories there are like that one.

From Jose & Susan Feliciano: |
|
Since my husband, Jose, and I have become involved with Project HOTSHOTS, we have learned of some of the fine work that the organization has accomplished. It seems like a rather simple concept and could very easily have been overlooked by less astute individuals who don't consider the basic fact that when a child goes to school, the self-esteem of feeling prepared can make all the difference in their otherwise dismal world. Imagine! To have a new, clean, intact backpack on your shoulder, filled with sharpened pencils and new crayons all in their box and pens that work! Now these children feel as though they are ready to learn; to meet the challenge of their day, prepared with the basic tools that so many of us take for granted. Don't you feel spiffy when you walk out the door in a new pair of shoes? Providing they don't kill your feet, you feel like you can take on the world! Or, better yet, when you first sit behind the wheel of your new car? You think, "Well, look at me!" It's the same thing for these children who live with so little material goods in their lives -- something like a new backpack for school is a tremendous gift and an asset to their future. I personally want to thank the people at Project HOTSHOTS who not only saw the need but envisioned the opportunity and have made "life" a better place for so many young people in our world! The Feliciano Family
---------------------------------- note: The Felicianos have been extremely generous, enthusiastic and supportive of the work we do. Jose Feliciano has recently performed for the Pope and the President... and his song "Feliz Navidad" was recently inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. |
